  • CorTen Steel
The use of CorTen steel in public spaces creates a warm, natural look. CorTen steel can be applied outdoors without any treatment, thus avoiding environment-unfriendly zinc or chemical coatings.
CorTen is a steel alloy with added chromium, copper and nickel, on which a dense, tight layer of rust appears. The air and water-tight patina is formed over a period of six months, which prevents the steel from rusting any further.
Apart from its warm character, CorTen steel has a number of other advantages: it is environment-friendly, sticker and graffiti-resistant, displays an attractive fading effect from orange to brown and any repairs or alterations to a CorTen steel structure will become invisible over time due to its natural oxidation.
For applications in public spaces, oxidation fluid or traces of CorTen rubbing off on clothes should be taken into account. Streetlife certainly considers this when designing products and will gladly provide tips on how CorTen steel products should best be applied.
  • Maintenance of Aluminium
The best way to keep aluminium looking pristine is regular cleaning to remove any build up of dirt. If left for an extended period of time, grime can cause staining and depending on the extent of staining will require a harsher cleaning system to remove the stain. In cleaning aluminium one should always start with the mildest method possible and only move to successively harsher treatments if absolutely necessary.
    Cleaning Methods of Aluminium
The cleaning methods in ascending order of harshness are:
    • Plain water
    • Mild soap / detergent
    • Solvents such as kerosene, turpentine or white spirit
    • Non-etching chemical cleaner
    • Wax-based polish
    • Abrasive wax
    • Abrasive cleaner
After cleaning the aluminium should be washed thoroughly and dried to prevent streaking. Special care should be taken to remove any traces of cleaner from edges and joins. Always follow manufacturers recommendations when using proprietary cleaning products.
Abrasive cleaners can alter the appearance of polished aluminium or aluminium with a "grain" finish. If the aluminium has a grain, always clean with the grain.
  • How to Maintain your Powder Coating
In conjunction with a regular maintenance program your powder coating will have a long life expectancy and will stay in good condition for many years. Just as washing your car is important for removing dirt and grime, your powder coating needs to be given a regular wash to keep it looking good.
The effects of ultra violet light atmospheric pollution, general dirt, grime and airborne salt deposits can all accumulate over time and should be removed at regular intervals.
As a general rule cleaning must take place every six months. In areas where pollutants are more prevalent, such as beachfront locations and industrial areas, cleaning programs should be carried out on a more frequent basis i.e. every three months.
Three steps to cleaning your powder coating
    • Remove loose deposits with a wet sponge rather than risk micro scratching the surface by dusting.
    • Using a soft brush and mild detergent in warm water clean the powder coating to remove any dust, salt or other deposits.
    • Always rinse after cleaning to remove any remaining detergent.
  • How to Maintain Stainless Steel
The attractive and hygienic surface appearance of stainless steel products cannot be regarded as completely maintenance free. All grades and finishes of stainless steel may in fact stain, discolour or attain an adhering layer of grime in normal service. To achieve maximum corrosion resistance the surface of the stainless steel must be kept clean.
Provided the grade, condition and surface finish were correctly selected for the particular service environment, fabrication and installation procedures were correct and that cleaning schedules are carried out regularly, good performance and long life will be achieved. Frequency and cost of cleaning of stainless steel is lower than for many other materials and this will often out-weigh higher acquisition costs. These principles apply whether the item concerned is a simple kitchen utensil or a large and complex architectural installation.
